Is being a rep the same as having a job?

How a self-employed opportunity differs from a role with a salary or paid hours.

The opportunities in this directory are offered as self-employed businesses. You may earn through product sales or customer introductions, but you aren’t being offered a salary or a set number of paid hours.

Read what you’re being offered

Words such as “career” or “flexible work” don’t explain the arrangement on their own. Check the agreement: what would you do, how would you get paid and which costs would be yours?

This guide describes the advertised opportunities. It does not decide anyone’s legal employment status. If the agreement is unclear, ask for an explanation before signing.

You’ll need to find customers

A personal website gives customers somewhere to order. You still need a way to reach them. Recommendations, events, follow-up and customer service all take time. Think about who you could approach without assuming friends and family will become customers.

If you need predictable pay

A job with an agreed salary or paid hours may be closer to what you’re looking for. You can use a jobs site to explore those roles. Our questionnaire also offers that option.

Understand your responsibilities

Ask about record keeping, tax, customer obligations and any rules that apply to the products or services. Your responsibilities depend on the arrangement and your circumstances. Use current official guidance or appropriate advice for questions about your own position.

Picture a working week

Write down who you would contact, what you would offer and how you would handle orders or introductions. Include preparation, follow-up and any travel. This gives you something concrete to compare with the time and money you can commit.
